After the rise of the Maratha empire, the castle became the center of Indian politics in the 18th century.
History of Shaniwar Wada Pune
Shaniwar Wada was originally a seven-story building of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire. It should have been made of stone completely but after the completion of the first floor or the first story, people of Satara (National Capital) complained to Shahu (Raja) that a stone monument can be approved and It was not only Shahu (Raja) himself and Peshwa, but an official letter was written to Peshwa that the remaining building was to be made of brick and not stone. Then the Wada was completed and after 90 years of attack by the British Artillery, all the top six stories started leaving the base of the stone only, which were preserved by the British artillery. Therefore only the stone base of Saturn Vada remains and can still be seen in the old parts of Pune.
