The Rajiv Gandhi Beagle Museum, commonly known as the Rajiv Gandhi Zoo, is located in the Katraj of Pune in India. It is managed by Pune Municipal Corporation. The 130 acre (53 hectares) zoo is divided into three parts: an animal orphanage, snake park and zoo, and 42 acres (17 ha) Katraj Lake.
History of Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park Pune
In 1953, Pune Municipal Corporation had constructed Peshwa Park on 7 acres (2.8 hectares) where Madhavrao Peshwa had established a private hospital in 1770. Based on Parvati Hill, this zoo exhibits animals in traditional cages located in the heart of the city. In 1986, with assistance from Pune Municipal Corporation, Shri Neelam Kumar Khair (the first Director of Park) created Katraj Snap Park on the land which was to be the Rajiv Gandhi Zoo Park. According to the guidelines of the Central Zoo Authority of India in 1997, to build another modern zoo, the municipality selected a site in Katharaj and started developing a new zoo. The zoo opened in 1999 as the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife Research Center, and initially only included Reptilia Park, Sambar, Spotted Deer and Monkeys. Although it took until 2005, all animals from Peshwe Park were eventually taken to the new site, and Peshwa Park was closed. The park also includes a rescue center for the injured and orphans. It has run an Animal Adoption Plan since October 2010.
