The mythology is that Sultan built the castle to give employment to villagers of the surrounding area; So he employed 1000 people, and the palace was built in five years. It was made in 12 lakh rupees. The total area is 13 acres and the built castle is included in seven acres, and the rest is a well-maintained garden. In 1969, Aga Khan Palace was donated to the Indian people by the Aga Khan IV as Gandhi's honor and his philosophy. Today Mahal holds a memorial on Gandhi where his ashes were kept. Then the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visited this place in 1974, where she had allocated an amount of 200,000 (US $ 3,100) per year for her maintenance. The amount has reached 1 million (US $ 16,000) till the 1990s, after which the National Monument of India was neglected for many years because of the inefficient allocation of funds. In protest against the deteriorating condition of the monument, in July 1999, a demonstration was performed on the statue of Mahatma Gandhi near the Pune railway station. There is very little improvement in the present situation. While visitors take a round to the castle, the back rooms can be seen with old, broken furniture and garbage. There are also rooms on the first floor, which are definitely in bad condition, hence are kept away from visitors. This condition was highlighted on how annual money is managed or how corruption can affect such otherwise beautiful and important monument.
